THE
BRIDGE by Betty Rich Hendon with Judy Chatham
Betty
Rich Hendon's book, THE BRIDGE: Unexpected Help With
Life's Crossings, covers historical events centered
around living in the Patterson home (owned by relatives of Lucille
Ball's babysitter on television); hearing and recording Civil War
stories from grandparents with fathers who fought on both sides;
living on Court Square in downtown Savannah (two blocks from Savannah
Cemetery where Alex and Queen Haley are buried and where Lucy's
babysitter is buried); teaching twelve blocks from downtown Memphis
during the days that building were burning following the death of
Martin Luther King, Jr.; viewing Memphis' reaction to this period
in history; teaching in the first high school in Memphis where integration
was successfully and peacefully achieved and first-hand seeing students'
reactions to the death of President John Kennedy; working as an
administrative assistant to the high school principal during the
turbulent 70's as students searched for expression and freedom from
educational rules and regulations; as an elementary school principal
viewing students reactions as they watched live television and the
explosion of Challenger following its lift-off; and experiencing
the first Memphis teacher strike as principal of Whitehaven Elementary
School on Elvis Presley Blvd., blocks from the Presley Mansion.
But
the major emphasis and focus of the book is how a loving God directs
our path and creates a bridge over the deep gorge between God and
man--providing the means for mankind to be transported across this
abyss to an inner peace and tranquility and to a relationship with
Jesus Christ--the Bridge to eternal life. |
